Building a Balanced Diet

VCS embraces its responsibility to teach students how to develop healthy, balanced diets.  We realize that our food service department can serve as a catalyst in performing this important service.

In an effort to help students to gain healthy dietary habits, our cafeterias build meals based on guidelines established in accordance with the National School Lunch Program.  Whether students choose to purchase the standard meal of the day or to build their own combination utilizing our ala carte selections, we encourage students to consume complete meals based on the following criteria that have been established to constitute a complete, balanced meal:

Four Food Components
Grain/Bread
Meat/Meat Alternate
Fruit/Vegetable
Fluid Milk

Lunch
We offer at least minimum servings of at least five food items for the appropriate age/grade group from the four food components daily.  When students take at least three of the five food items, we consider it a complete lunch.  Students are charged the meal price when they follow these guidelines; students can take up to five food items if they choose to.  If students purchase fewer than three items from the four food components, their selections are charged as ala carte items and not as a complete meal.

Grade Level Lunch Meal Lunch Ala Carte Large Lunch Side Small Lunch Side Large Dessert Small Dessert Extra Milk or Juice Bottled Beverage
K-4 $2.25 $2.25 N/A N/A N/A N/A 0.40 0.40 (8 oz.)

Adult $3.25 $3.25 $2.00 $1.50 $1.50 $1.00 0.40 1.00 (20 oz.)

Breakfast
We offer at least four food items from three or four of the food components in at least the minimum serving size for the appropriate age/grade group. To qualify the meal as complete and to be charged for a breakfast meal, students must take three food items; students may take all four items if they choose. If a student purchases items for breakfast that don’t equal three full-servings of food items, their selections are charged as ala carte items and not as a complete meal.

K-4 $1.25 $1.25 $1.00 0.65 0.40 0.40 (8 oz.)

Variety
Our buildings operate on three and four-week menu cycles and offer a variety of ala carte food items as well.  We work hard to exceed guidelines for minimal offerings in cafeterias in an effort to offer appetizing and healthy selections for all of our students.
