4th & 5th Grade Guidance

Welcome to the Counselor's Corner! My name is Merideth Brock and I am the school counselor for the 4th and 5th grade building. I have been married to a wonderful man for 25 years and we have three children who all attend the Charter School. As an employee and a parent, I can tell you firsthand that this school is a very special place!

I am excited to let you know about a conflict management program we use at each of our elementary buildings on campus. The program, Kelso's Choices (K-3) and KC's Choices (4-5) is based on the premise that every child is capable of becoming a peacemaker. The program offers eight options (see KC's wheel below) students can choose from to resolve minor conflicts on their own. Students will be taught to determine the difference between minor problems they can handle on their own and serious problems that require an adultís help.

Each staff member has been trained on the program and all of the students will be trained by the school counselors as well. This is our third year using the program at the school and parents have given us feedback that they have found this tool to be very useful in the home too. To learn more about Kelso's and KC's Choices visit their parent page. The skills presented in this program are concepts your child can use over the course of a lifetime.

Along with our character education program, our students are taught that bullying is never acceptable.  Students are taught the difference between someone bothering them and bullying. Bullying is repeated, includes an imbalance of power and can be from just one person or a group.  Any situation involving bullying needs to be reported to an adult at school immediately.

If a student or adult doesnít feel comfortable reporting a situation, each building has set up a Help Box in the office.  Please see the parent letter and forms below explaining the procedure for using the Help Box.

I look forward to meeting each of you this year. If you don't meet me in carline (I am usually the one calling the names), please stop by and introduce yourself to me sometime. I count it a great privilege, responsibility, and honor to work with your children. Please let me know how I can help you this year!

Sincerely,

Merideth Brock
