We are going to have a GREAT year!! What a wonderful August we have had so far!
Our class is collecting box tops and soup can labels. Please send any you may have in with your child anytime.
To start our year off with English Language Arts, we are going to use the curriculum McGraw-Hill to reinforce our skills and strategies each week. The website is www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com and your child will now has a user name and password to access this site. We will start with the comprehension strategy main idea and details along with the vocabulary strategy context clues. Our comprehension skill is reread. Our weekly Anthology story is called, "Kids, Incorporated," which is narrative nonfiction. Our phonics skill (spelling words) focuses on long 0 words, such as bolt and shadow. Our Language Arts and spelling tests are on Fridays, unless otherwise noted in the agenda and website. In writing we are continuing with what is a main idea and supporting detail? We will use various published articles, such as Highlights for Children and National Geographic, to show how authors organize their writing with strong main ideas that can be proved with details that support the main idea. Look for these writings outside our classroom wall in the hallway!
In Math we are off to a good start learning all about multiplication. We will start by multiplying by one-digit numbers. We will also delve into drawing models to portray equations to solve. Our second quiz will be Friday, September 4. The website for math is www.thinkcentral.com and your child will also receive a user name and password shortly for this site, too.
In Science we are having great classroom discussions about what is science and what scientists do. We will also learn how and why scientists collect data. Our Unit 1 Assessment will be at the end of August.
In Social Studies we will learn all about Florida's early history. Our first unit assessment will be in September. We will also use www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com for social studies.
