Welcome to Speech & Language Therapy at VCS. My name is Debbie Kennard and I have been a Speech & Language Pathologist for 19 years. I earned a B.S. in Psychology and Elementary Education from SUNY @ Brockport and a M.A. in Communication Disorders from UCF. I have been married to my husband, Matt, for 16 years and we have 3 children who attend VCS. I am in my 9th year at VCS.
I serve students in Speech and Language Therapy at the ECC and the IC.
ECC: Students at the PK are learning how to position their mouths to form speech sounds. We're using mirrors and pictures to help with this. PK students are also learning to be keen listeners. They need to hear the subtle differences in speech sounds before they can produce them. Students take home their folders at the end of each 9 weeks. They are yours to keep. Please take some time with your child to go over what they've done in speech. It's a great reinforcer.
IC: Students in 2nd and 3rd grade language therapy are also learning to be keen listeners. We've been focusing on how to hone in on target words when a teacher is giving directions. We are also learning how to organize our thoughts and information so it's easier to handle. 2nd and 3rd grade speech students have a green folder for them to keep. In it there are activities and word lists for them to practice their speech outside of school. Daily practice is encouraged. A little practice goes a long way. See the folder for details.
