Thank you all for coming to orientation! I was thrilled to be able to meet every single one of my students! We have the first two days under our belt learning the rules and procedures, and now are ready to dive into our curriculum. Below you will find the skills we will be working on in our reading series this week. Please be sure to review with your child as our first test will be this Friday.
Number Concepts is the focus for our first math chapter. Even and odd numbers, representing even numbers, understanding place value, expanded form, and writing numbers in different ways will comprise the math lessons for the week. We will also be working on recognition of basic addition facts. Each night your child will have a practice sheet of 20 addition problems to practice. They will be tested every Wednesday on a mixed selection of addition facts. Please practice with your child each night. This first nine weeks, the facts will focus on addition. The second nine weeks, we will switch to subtraction. Mixed addition and subtraction will make-up the third nine weeks, and multiplication will comprise the fourth nine weeks.
Working like a scientist is the focus of our first unit in science. The children will be learning what inquiry skills are and what tools scientist use. Once we finish with this unit, we will shift to social studies and take a look a maps.
I look forward to a fantastic year working with you and your child.
Snack: Please be sure to pack a healthy snack daily for your child. This is a quick snack to help us make it to our lunch time at 12:31 pm. The snack should be able to be eaten with their fingers and be of nutritious value. Grapes, carrot and or celery sticks, gold fish, apples, pretzels, cheese-its, and fruit snacks are just a few suggestions. I will not have extra snacks available, so please make sure that your child has one packed. Second, your child may bring in a water bottle to place on their desk. This will help with the up and down of going to the water fountain. The only thing that I ask is that the water bottle not have a screw top. If it gets knocked over, it could cause a mess. If you should have any questions about either the snack or water bottles, please feel free to contact me.
Homework: Homework starts this week. Homework will be given Monday through Thursday. I ask that you look over your child's homework and initial each piece. Please remember that the homework is due the next day unless I specify differently. Homework turned in a day late will automatically receive a 60% (unless the child has been absent).
Email: When emailing me, please be sure to put "student" in the subject line.
