Media Center

Welcome!  Our goal in the media center is to create an environment that inspires students to pursue their interests and expand their horizons through reading, to become effective users of information and ideas, and to develop college and career readiness skills that enable them to become independent, lifelong learners.

BARNES & NOBLE BOOK FAIR

Holiday shopping has begun!  Barnes & Noble is supporting a book fair for the VHS Media Center on December 3rd & 4th.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, you can shop online and still support the book fair from December 3rd though 9th.

Prior to making your purchases, please present the Bookfair ID # 12049748.

FOOD FOR FINES

Students have a win-win opportunity beginning November 16th.  Book fines of $1 or less will be waived when they donate a canned food item to the media center.  When fines are over $1, a second food item will clear their accounts.  Everyone is a winner as accounts are cleared and a local food bank is given students' donations on December 13th.  To check media center accounts, follow directions under Destiny Card Catalog below.

FLORIDA TEENS READ  PROGRAM

Maybe it's because this is an election year.  Maybe the state committee made some outstanding selections after reading more than 200 books. For whatever reason, the new 2016-2017 Florida Teens Read books are proving to ve very popular with VHS teens! Voting opens on March 1, 2017 for students who read at least 3 books.  Prizes are awarded to students who read 5, 10, and all 15 FTR books.  Get started today by checking out this year's FTR list.

Reading is a joy, a privilege and the right of every student.  As you select the library books you will read, please understand that every book is not the best choice for every student.  If a book is unappealing or offensive to you in any way, please return it and select another.  You know which reading materials best serve you and your own standards, reading levels, and beliefs.  Just remember these wise words spoken by someone once upon a time.  "Dinosaurs didn't read.  Now, they are extinct!"

*Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

*Nil on Fire by Lynne Matson

Nearly Found by Elle Cosimano

*Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon

*The Making of a Navy SEAL by Brandon Webb

MEDIA CENTER POLICIES

We have established the following policies to encourage students to uphold our core value of stewardship as they use media center resources:

·   Three books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed for another two-week period if there is no hold on them.

·   Late books and overdue fines will restrict signing out additional items.

·   The replacement cost will be charged for lost or damaged books.

·   Late books will be charged $.05 per day after a five day grace period.

·   Student computers are provided solely for academic purposes from 7 AM-2:40 PM.

·   Students are asked to be respectful of others and use the media center as a place for reading, studying, and conducting research in a quiet atmosphere.

·   Students need a pre-signed pass from the media staff to come to the media center after eating lunch.  Lunches will not be eaten in the media center until further notice, but students are welcome to come to use computers and check out books.
