Teen Trendsetters « Clubs Listing
Teen Trendsetters is a nationally recognized program managed by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Teen mentors meet second grade mentees weekly for a minimum of 24 contacts throughout the school year. Teens are expected to be at each mentoring session on time, be prepared for each mentoring session, and be a positive role model.
The program allows high school students to give back to their community. It's very rewarding to watch a child grow in confidence and become excited about books as he or she becomes a fluent reader. At a mandatory training session, mentors will receive teacher workbooks with weekly lessons (and answers!) and reading books that their mentees may take home after finishing their workbooks. Veteran mentors will also share tips that they learned for engaging their mentees in the 3:00 - 3:45 PM sessions, and we'll hold drawings for prizes that will be helpful during mentoring.
