For the remainder of the school year, we will be studying A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. This play, performed on Broadway and in motion picture, portrays a few weeks in the life of the Younger family, an African-American family living on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. A Raisin in the Sun is primarily about dreams as the main characters struggle to deal with the oppressive circumstances that rule their lives. We will study this novel in Literature Circles, where students will have a group job and a reading role to perform daily related to the Literature Circle Packet and the book. These jobs and roles will rotate so each member has the chance to practice different tasks. The packet must be completed each day in order to get class work and participation points, and the entire completed packet will be a writing grade. In addition, there will be quizzes and tests related to the play. It's important that students keep up with their work since there will not be much opportunity for make-ups.
Please make sure your 8th grader is also staying on top of their AR goal for this nine weeks. The Media Center will be closed several days as we approach the May 11th deadline, so students need to be reading and testing ahead of time.
