Sounds in reading(phonics) vs. sounds in speaking (phonetics): What’s the difference?
Phonetics is the study and classification of spoken sounds in languages esp. with regard to the physical aspects of their production; the branch of linguistics that deals with this.
Phonics is the method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning the phonetic values of letters, groups of letters, syllables, etc.
The correlations between sound and symbol in an alphabetic writing system; the phonic method of teaching reading
It is important to note that when a teacher might say that your child knows how to sound out letters or “knows the sounds” , they are speaking about phonics and the instruction of sounding out a written symbol that has meaning for reading. When an SLP says your child can produce a sound, they are speaking of physically making a sound correctly – not if they can read and sound out a written word.
I'm housed at the Middle School, but I also float around campus serving 4th & 5th grade at the new 4/5 bldg., & all Middle School students as well as High School. If you are at the Middle School, speech therapy will be Wednesdays and Fridays. If you are a 4th or 5th grade student, your therapy will be on Mondays and Thursdays. Please feel free to contact me either by phone or by e-mail with any questions or concerns regarding your child's speech and/or language program.
Looking to get some PI time? I am in need of a few supplies.
If you can fulfill any of these needs, I would be so appreciative. Just send the item into school with your child with a note stating the dollar amount and my name or Speech. Their classroom teacher will pass it along to me.
