Media Center

Welcome! Our goal in the media center is to create an environment that inspires students to pursue their interests and expand their horizons through reading, to become effective users of information and ideas, and to develop college and career readiness skills that enable them to become independent, lifelong learners.

Destiny Card Catalog - students' accounts can be accessed with: username - their daily computer logon and password - their student ID #.  The Catalog tab connects readers to books and researchers to reliable reference resources. Our collection of Follett eBooks may be accessed via Destiny now. 

 

SUMMER READING 2014  - look for the assignments posted under the media center PDF documents

The final media center hours for the summer program will be Thursday, July 24 from 4:00-7:00 PM and Tuesday, July 29 from 12:00 – 3:00 PM.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK THE DUE DATE IN THE FRONT OF YOUR BOOKS!   

Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to purchase books to “mark the text.” 

Free copies of Anthem my be picked up in the media center while supplies last.    

All summer reading books are available in the VHS Media Center for check out. 

Keep track of the due dates posted in the front of your books.  You must have no overdue books and/or late fines when attending orientation on August 5th. 

Summer reading assignments are the first grades for next year.  Let’s start the year off with success!

 

PI HOURS OPPORTUNITIES

If you are looking for opportunities to earn PI hours, the media center has the following needs for the 2014-2015 school year:

*  10 cases of water

*  Dinner size paper plates

*  Heavy duty forks and spoons

*  Volunteer to assist with water sales during Homecoming Week's Powderpuff game.

Math Open Reference - a free interactive math reference, covering high-school geometry, functions, and calculus. Has tools that help students visualize what all these numbers and formulas actually mean.

LAPTOP  CHECKOUT PROGRAM

The VHS Media Center offers a laptop lending program to students who do not have access to computers at home for word processing.  Laptops may be borrowed for three day periods.  Stop in the media center for more information.

Facts on File and Infobase databases provide students with current reliable magazine and newspaper articles.  Each databases provides a translation option.  Scroll down to the list under Media Center PDF Documents to access these resources.

Follett eBooks – students can access our VHS eBook collection by clicking the Destiny link on the VHS Media Center webpage.  Directions on how to access the collection are found under Media Center Documents.

ManyBooks.net – popular titles, recommendations, and recent reviews of more than 29,000 eBooks available for Kindles, Nooks, iPads, and most other eReaders.  Best of all they’re FREE!

PARENT INVOLVEMENT HOURS

Informational Hours – We offer an extensive list of books for parents interested in earning two hours per book.  Both qualifying parents may test on the same book.  Our list of parent involvement books is located under Media Center PDF Documents below.  Call or email for available times for completing tests in the media center.   

Service Hours –Students often request books that are "the next in the series." If parents are interested in purchasing books for service hours, we have listed several requests below:

MEDIA CENTER POLICIES - We have established the following policies to encourage students to demonstrate our core value of stewardship as they use media center resources:

·   Three books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed for another two-week period if there is no hold on them.

·   Late books and overdue fines will restrict signing out additional items.

·   The replacement cost will be charged for lost or damaged books.

·   Late books will be charged $.05 per day after a five day grace period.   

·   Student computers are provided solely for academic purposes from 7 AM-2:40 PM.

·   Students are asked to be respectful of others and use the media center as a place for reading, studying, and conducting research in a quiet atmosphere. 

·   You may eat in the media center during your lunch period if you have a signed pass from the media staff.  For the protection of our resources, food and drink are NOT permitted near books and computers.
